Big Picture Framing leased 1,757 square feet of retail space in the Dorset Square Mall, 150 Dorset St., South Burlington. Rick Harrison of J.L. Davis Realty assisted the tenant and the landlord.

Burlington College entered into a purchase-and-sale agreement with the Committee on Temporary Shelter (COTS). The college’s Old North End headquarters will be home to COTS administrative offices, family services program, and housing resource center. The college will retain the five houses on Lakeview Terrace, Haswell Street, and North Avenue along with the parking lot. COTS will have a parking easement on a portion of the lot. Burlington College, COTS, and the Roman Catholic Diocese, from which the college has agreed to purchase a 32-acre campus on North Avenue, intend to close on all the properties by the end of this year, but will share space through May.

Data Innovations announced its acquisition of Battery Ventures, a multi-stage investment firm focused on technology and innovation worldwide. As part of the acquisition, Mike Epplen will become chief executive officer, working through a transition process with founders Greg Vail and Dave Potter. In conjunction with the purchase, Epplen and Battery Ventures’ General Partner Dave Tabors and Vice President Chelsea Stoner joined Data Innovations’ board of directors.

Don and Cheryl Cota, the owners of Vermont Aerospace Manufacturing Inc. of Lyndonville and Burlington, announced the sale of the company to its employees through an Employee Stock Ownership Plan. The Cotas decided to create the ESOP to reward employees for their years of service and to insure that the business would stay in the area. The company employs more than 200 highly skilled machinists, engineers, fabrication, and support personnel.

Northern Power Systems Inc. announced the acquisition of the community wind turbine blade manufacturing business of Knight & Carver Wind Group of National City, Calif. The announcement was made by John P. Danner, chief executive officer of Northern Power Systems, and Sampson A. Brown, president and CEO of Knight & Carver. Morin Avenue D LLC, represented by Greg Dirmaier of J.L. Davis Realty, bought a 10,645-square-foot commercial building on 1.2 acres at 45 Avenue D, Williston. Linda I. Letourneau of Redstone was the listing broker representing 45 Avenue D LLC.

The Vermont Business Roundtable has acquired Nordic Educational Trust. The trust was created in 1988 by former Roundtable member Ross Anderson and his wife, Gail, to provide scholarship grants and other financial aid to assist deserving students from Chittenden and Grand Isle counties in pursuing technical education at two-year post-secondary institutions. Bill Stritzler of Smugglers’ Notch Resort, chairman of the Roundtable, said the acquisition will provide the opportunity to expand the eligibility criteria to students from across Vermont, to grow in size by reaching out to the business community, and to provide mentoring opportunities.

Liberty Mutual Insurance leased 9,438 square feet at Maple Tree Place from Inland Western Retail Real Estate Trust. Tony Blake of V/T Commercial, Liberty Mutual’s exclusive area tenant representative, made the announcement.

Spherion Staffing Services announced that Ken Ballard, the South Burlington franchise owner, opened an additional location in Plattsburgh, N.Y., in the Chamber of Commerce building on U.S. 9. The office will be managed by Jana Venable, who has more than five years’ experience in the industry. She was with an Orlando, Fla., company.

Sovernet Communications announced the opening of a sales office in Keene, N.H. The office at 160 Emerald St. will be staffed by account managers serving the company’s growing southwestern New Hampshire customer base. Rich Kendall, Sovernet’s president, made the announcement.

Galen Dow, founder and president of New Breed Marketing, announced a 400-square-foot expansion to its Champlain Mill space in Winooski to serve the company’s recent growth — 9 percent from 2008 to 2009, and 14 percent for 2010 to date. GK Architects designed the new space; the contractor was JRB Enterprises LLC; the principal for the project was Jason Bushey. The project consisted of expanding and redesigning the layout to create a more functional space for continued growth.

B.R.P. LLC bought the building at 70 South Winooski Ave. in Burlington known as the Daniel Kern House. It is a fully leased 8,500-square-foot Class A building with retail and office space. Duncan Harris of Redstone represented the buyer, and Jed Dousevicz of V/T Commercial represented the seller, David Scheuer and Retrovest Associates.

Rachel Lee Cummings announced the sale of Armistead Caregiver Services in Shelburne to A.M.E. LLC of Burlington. Cummings continues in the founder’s role and serves on the board of directors. Amy Feeney has assumed the presidency. Feeney is a 20-year resident of Vermont with a variety of experience in recruiting, scheduling, management, human resources, finance, marketing, and senior care. She and her husband, Dan, were leaders in building the Multi Generational Center in Burlington in 1997. Kim Wichert of Country Business Inc. managed the transaction.

Royea Group LLC bought Access Door Automation from Larry and Julie Bevins. The company does sales and servicing of automated doors throughout Vermont. John Beal of Vermont Business Brokers was the listing and selling broker.

The University of Vermont Bookstore leased 2,300 square feet to open a satellite retail store at 46 Church St. in Burlington. UVM plans to offer many of its branded products and promote campus events. Tony Blake of V/T Commercial and Yves Bradley of Pomerleau assisted the university and the landlord, Joseph E. Frank.

Windows & Doors By Brownell announced the opening of a Marvin Design Gallery in West Lebanon, N.H. The 4,300-square-foot Design Gallery showroom at 8 Glen Road in the PowerHouse Mall, will present the numerous options available from Marvin.

Robert and John Ste. Marie, the owners of Green Mountain Camera, announced that the company will consolidate its retail and warehouse operations into one location at 14 Sunset Drive, Waterbury Center. The retailer has outgrown its current facilities.

Champlain Chocolates leased 62,430 square feet at 290 Boyer Circle, Williston, Yves Bradley of Pomerleau Real Estate was the leasing agent, and Nicole Senecal of Omega Real Estate was the listing agent.

Community College of Vermont has been authorized by the board of trustees of the Vermont State Colleges to enter a lease agreement with DEW Construction Corp. for the design and building of a new academic facility for CCV in Rutland. The 30,000-square-foot facility will be at the corner of Wales and West streets. CCV will lease the building from DEW. It will replace CCV’s location on Evelyn Street.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. announced its acquisition of Diedrich Coffee Inc. Diedrich Coffee, which produces three brands of specialty coffees — Diedrich, Coffee People, and Gloria Jean’s — has become a wholly owned subsidiary of Green Mountain. The acquisition was announced by Lawrence J. Blanford, Green Mountain Coffee’s president and chief executive officer. Through the acquisition, the company gains manufacturing and distribution facilities in California. Diedrich will be integrated into Green Mountain’s specialty coffee business unit.

John Larkin, the owner of Lark-Inns of South Burlington, announced the completion of an extensive renovation and expansion of the lobby and guest reception areas of the Comfort Suites Hotel on Shelburne Road. The project doubles the size of the original lobby, allowing a more expansive breakfast area, complemented by a stone fireplace. The recently renovated Sunset Ballroom offers space for events of up to 250 attendees.

Green Mountain Inn in Stowe announced the complete refurbishing of 12 of the historic hotel’s main inn room inventory. The project includes remodeling bathrooms, improving air conditioning systems, readjusting floor plans, installing high-grade noise-damping windows, and adding large-screen plasma televisions. Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. announced the acquisition of Timothy’s Coffees of the World Inc. of Toronto from an affiliate of Sun Capital Partners Inc. for approximately $157 million. The acquisition includes the Timothy’s World Coffee brand and wholesale business, but does not include retail operations. It will be maintained as a wholly owned Canadian subsidiary with operations integrated into GMCR’s specialty coffee business unit. The retail portion of Timothy’s business was purchased by Bruegger’s Enterprises Inc. and will continue to support the Timothy’s brand across Canada. GMCR’s acquisition includes a five-year coffee supply agreement with Bruegger’s Canadian affiliate.

Mark Saba, the owner of Formula Ford of South Barre, announced the purchase of Walker Motors in Montpelier from Wade Walker. Formula Ford’s operation will move to the Walker Motors site on the Barre–Montpelier Road. Walker will continue to operate his other dealerships.

The location, owned by South Burlington Real Estate, has updated and new simulators and occupies about 5,500 square feet. Edgewater Gallery has bought the Middlebury property at 1 Mill St. from Frog Hollow Craft Association. The property was the longtime home of Frog Hollow Craft Center and its educational partner.
