For the second consecutive year, Investment Property Managers, owned by Ann Milizia, was chosen for the Best of Burlington Award in the Real Estate Managers category by the U.S. Commerce Association. The award recognizes “outstanding local businesses” throughout the country that the organization believes have achieved “exceptional marketing success” in their local communities and business categories.” Only 1.4 percent of recipients qualified as two-time award-winners.
Bob Schwartz, president, and Dixie O’Connor, project manager, at Great Northern Construction Inc. have completed the EPA-HUD Curriculum for Lead Safety for Renovation, Repair and Painting. Schwartz and O’Conner received Certified Lead Renovator status upon passing the exam.
Inc. magazine and Winning Workplaces announced the winners of the 2010 Top Small Company Workplaces, and two Vermont companies made the list of five. They were Chroma Technology Corp. of Bellows Falls and Dealer.com of Burlington. The winners were chosen by a national panel of experts in leadership and small to mid-sized business from 500 completed applications.
Delta Dental Plan of Vermont announced that Charles P. Smith was elected to the board of trustees. Smith is a management consultant whose career history includes senior management positions with KeyBank, the state of Vermont, and the Snelling Center for Government.
TruexCullins Architecture and Interior Design and Heritage Aviation received the Hertzel N. Pasackow Architectural Excellence Award from the Burlington Business Association for a total renovation of the 60,000-square-foot, 1955-era Army National Guard hangar as a general aviation facility in South Burlington. The design team included Richard Deane, AIA; Tom Hengelsberg, AIA, LEED AP; and Peter Burns. Interior designers were Kim Deetjen, ASID, and Cecilia Redmond, LEED AP; and Casa Bella Design. Civil engineer was Stantec; landscape architect, H. Keith Wagner Partnership; mechanical and electrical engineer, Hallam ICS; structural engineer, Artisan Engineering; commissioning, Thomas Engineering; construction manager, Engelberth Construction Inc.; owner’s construction representative, Barden Inspection Service; and air-sealing testing authority, Building Energy.
Caleidoscope Communications Co. was named to One Communications 2009 Masters Club, the top sales performance award afforded members of the company’s Business Partner Program.
Jaime Laredo, music director and conductor of the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, is among the 229 leaders elected members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He joins this year’s honorees in the arts and humanities: Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Daniel Howe; former New York City Ballet principal dancer Suzanne Farrell; actors John Lithgow and Denzel Washington; director Francis Ford Coppola; jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins; and baritone Thomas Hampson.
Vermont Public Television received a My Source Education Innovation award from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. John King, VPT’s president, accepted the award. The public television network was honored for “an extensive educational initiative related to the project Lake Champlain Voyages of Discovery: Bringing History Home and the documentary Champlain: The Lake Between. Caro Thompson of Broadwing Productions was the filmmaker. Elsa Gilbertson, administrator of the Chimney Point State Historic Site, led the team that generated the educational content. She and Thompson were the primary writers; additional content was provided by Judy Dow, John Fadden, Thomas Hughes, and Allison Stetzel.
Dale Rouille was chosen 2009 Caregiver of the Year by the Home Instead Senior Care franchise office in South Burlington. Home Instead’s owner, Patrice Thabault, was recognized for outstanding business performance at the franchisor’s annual meeting. The Hallmark II award is presented for “superior sales and service satisfaction.”
Chittenden Bank, now known as People’s United Bank, announced that its Wilmington branch was named 2009 Branch of the Year and awards were presented to the following Wilmington staff: Jeanette Underwood, financial services manager; Cheri Allen; David Boulton; Joyce Brooks; Diana Brown; Julie Havness; Joni Sullivan; Tracie Adrian; Debra Corey; John Gray; David LaForest; Kathy Leech; Steve Simmons; Laraine Smith; Angela Webster; and Harold Weissman.
The International Center for Captive Insurance Education received the highest annual award from the Captive Insurance Companies Association, recognizing the institution’s “significant contributions to the growth and success of the captive industry. Mitch Cantor, ICCIE’s executive director, accepted the award on behalf of the organization.
Davis & Hodgdon Associates CPAs announced that David Brace was awarded the professional license of Certified Public Accountant. Brace joined the firm in 2005.
Ronald Court, founder of the Booker T. Washington Society, was re-elected president of the society by the board of directors.
Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield received this year’s Terry Ehrich Award for Social Responsibility in Business from Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility. The award is given annually to an individual who, for a sustained period, demonstrates “exceptional socially responsible business principles in the workplace, political, social, and natural environments.”
Yankee Magazine’s Travel Guide to New England named 38 Vermont establishments as Best of New England — Editors’ Choice winners for 2010. Yankee’s editors and contributors choose the restaurants, lodgings, and attractions for the list. Some of the unusual categories are Best Scenic Graveyard, Best Stargazing, Best Place to Time-Travel, and Best Cult Brunch Spot. Merchants Bank’s website, VermontMatters.com, received two awards from the Financial Communications Society: a Gold in the category of Website in the Corporate Image and Best of Show in the Interactive Media category.
Bolton Valley Resort was honored by the National Ski Areas Association with a 2010 Silver Eagle Award recognizing its installation of a wind turbine. It is the first ski area in Vermont and the second in the nation to install a wind turbine. Larry Williams, co-owner of the resort, accepted the award.
Charlene Waite is the recipient of the first Linda Andersen Caregiver Scholarship, sponsored by Armistead Caregiver Services in conjunction with the Community of Vermont Elders. Waite has worked with the elderly since the early 1990s and has volunteered at Gifford Medical Center.
Hickok & Boardman Inc. announced that several of its employee were honored by the Champlain Valley Association of Insurance Professionals. Robin Faraone was elected president of the organization; Louise Phenix, treasurer; and Elizabeth Stillwell, secretary. Mary Ann Dion received the Insurance Professional of the Year award from the organization. Lee Findholt was named Rookie of the Year.
Amber L. Barber and Caryn E. Waxman, attorneys with the law firm Downs Rachlin Martin PLLC, were selected as fellows of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers. They co-chair the firm’s family law group.
The Vermont Council for Quality announced that Rutland Regional Medical Center achieved the 2009 Governor’s Award for Performance Excellence. •
